It was a special afternoon for the Waterloo Oxford Crusaders boys slo pitch team bringing home the WCSSAA title for the first time in school history. On Tuesday, the Crusaders won a hard fought final over the talented Bluevale Knights 8-6 at the Peter Hallman Ballyard.
The visiting Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the 1st inning. The Crusaders however would respond with 1 run in the home half, then in the 2nd with two out they scored 2 runs tying the game at 3-3. The big inning for Waterloo Oxford was the 4th, scoring 5 runs and building an 8-3 lead.
Head Coach Gavin Albrecht called this win "a long time coming" and says he's extremely proud of this group. Nathan Torchia had a big day at the plate going 3-3 with 1 RBI. Along with his offensive output, Torchia made 2 key catches in centre field helping lead the Crusaders to victory. Zach Mark went 1-2 at the dish with 2 runs batted in. Mitch McKay also had a solid aternoon with 2 hits and 2 RBI.
Last week the Crusaders defeated Elmira in the semi-finals and the game was highlighted by a diving catch in left field by Brady Schmidt. Bluevale advanced to the championship with a victory over the Grand River Renegades.
The Crusaders will also play in the WCSSAA girls slo pitch championship on Wednesday afternoon. WO will face the Elmira Lancers in a rematch of last year's championship game. First pitch is at 3:00pm at the Peter Hallman Ballyard in Kitchener,
