Kostas Poulimenos will continue his basketball career at Fanshawe College this coming fall. The point guard is eager to compete with one of the top programs in the country. The North Park Collegiate student drew attention from many programs across the CCAA as well as USPORTS but felt Fanshawe was a fantastic opportunity.
“When I went for my visit the first time it just felt like home and felt liked I belonged there.”
Poulimenos originally started his high school basketball career at Assumption College, making a brief stop playing for TRC Academy in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association before finishing his career with the Trojans. He helped lead the team to a city championship in his final season, something that he always aspired to do.
“It was a great feeling winning but also to do it with all of my buddies that I grew up playing with made it even more special. I felt almost relieved in a way that I finally had a chance to come out on top.”
While his stint at North Park was brief, head coach Todd Andrew said that Poulimenos’ presence and impact on the court helped elevate the play of his teammates throughout the entirety of their season.
“Kostas is a motivated player that is always working on his skills to take his game to a higher level. He will take on any role that is asked of him to help his team be successful.”
During his club years, Poulimenos played for a number of clubs however, most recently Poulimenos has been suiting up for the RWI Kings, a club program that took on a team in the tri-city area. Playing alongside some of the top players in the region Poulimenos was pleased with the exposure and competition the program has brought.
“It has been a great experience. Being able to travel and play against a variety of different players and skill levels has helped me grow as a player and help me prepare for the next level.
RWI head coach Tyler Vincent had high praise for Poulimenos both as a player and a person, stating that Fanshawe is adding a fantastic individual and basketball player to their program.
“With Kostas, Fanshawe is getting a very coachable and tough competitor that is always looking to make his teammates better. I have no doubt he will transition to the collegiate game smoothly both on and off the court.”
When speaking about the decision to commit to the Falcons, Poulimenos was humble when saying it has always been his goal to play at the next level, emphasizing that it was not always something he thought was possible.
“Honestly at one point I thought about calling it quits but I knew that I really wanted this, so I pushed through. I have put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into this game and it feels great to know that it has paid off.”
Fanshawe posted a 7-7 record overall last season, losing in a tightly contest game against Lambton College in the first round of the playoffs. Poulimenos is excited to join the team and help them compete for a national title.
“I want to come in and learn as much as I can as a basketball player and a person while winning as many games as we can and eventually hold a championship trophy.”
