Soooo…how did you do on Part I of The Great Tri-City Sports Quiz ?
If my math is correct (and there's certainly no guarantee of that), there was a possibility of earning 85 points with those 20 questions.
Part II is shorter - only 10 questions - but has another 52 points available. That comes to a total of…hmm…let me see…carry the 7…hang on a sec…ya…here it is…a total of 137 points.
Anything over 100 makes you a Tri-City/519 Sports Online guru.
But no matter your score, hopefully you learned a lot more about Tri-City sports and our very impressive list of local athletes, teams, coaches, etc. - past and present.
This is my last column for 2019 so I want to say thank you to Darren Stevenson for asking me to be a part of his 519 team this year. It's been a real pleasure.
And thank you for reading this and/or any of my previous columns. I appreciate the support and remember…#LocalSportsMatter !!!
Enjoy Part II of the quiz and see you in the New Year.
Happy Holidays to all.

21. Rob Ducey played for the Toronto Blue Jays (twice) and was born in Toronto.
But what Cambridge high school did he attend?
Oh, and btw, which way did he bat? And which way did he throw? And what's the over/under on whether he hit 20 home runs while in the majors?
22. Staying with Cambridge, golfer Ian Leggatt also attended high school there. But was he born there? And which school did he attend? He was a leftie, right? Or was he?
Also, did Leggatt ever win a PGA event during his career?
23. I recently wrote a column profiling the fabulous Woodcroft sisters of Waterloo, Nikki and Amanda.
Without peeking, what is their sport? Where did they attend high school? What about university?
Two points if you can name the country they (and Canada) came excruciatingly close to defeating to qualify for the Summer Games in Tokyo.
24. For one point each, match the following with the year it came to be:
i) Rockway Golf Course A) 1919
ii) Kitchener Auditorium B) 1951
iii) Preston Rivulettes C) 1935
iv) Kitchener Panthers D) 1957
v) University of Waterloo E) 1930
25. Put the following events in proper sequence from the most recent and going backwards:
- St. Jeromes High School closes its doors
- local hockey player Tanner Pearson (now with Vancouver Canucks) is born
- super sports fan (despite his affinity for all teams Detroit) Dave Chilton publishes The Wealthy Barber
- Whistle Bear Golf Club opens its first nine holes
26. Dave Kipfer was the star of the Cameron Heights basketball team that won OFSAA in 1983. He went from there to play on scholarship at a U.S. division 1 school. One point if you can name the school and a second point if you know that school's nickname.
Also, who was Kipfer's very well-known coach while he was there? (Hint: this coach coached in the NBA for a time and has been to the Final Four several times)
Finally, Kipfer had a teammate on this college team who is currently a coach in the NBA's Western Conference. Name him and I'll generously give you two points for it.
27. Depending on which sport(s) you follow, you may or may not know who Chris Ackie is.
One point if you can name the sport he plays professionally and another if you know which Cambridge high school he attended.
A further point for naming his 519 university and lastly, a fourth point if you can cite the position he plays.
28. For a single point each, provide the surname for the following people who helped to promote 519 local sports while working for CTV Kitchener: Wayne, Don, Randy, Darren, Greg, Melanie & Jeff.
29. Also for a single point each: what's the nickname of the following teams?
- Waterloo minor hockey? - KCI sports teams? - Resurrection High School sports teams?
- Ayr Jr. C hockey? - Elmira Jr. B hockey? - Conestoga College? - K-W Jr. A lacrosse?
30. Although generally talented in multiple areas, name the sport most people would associate with the following:
Senator Martha Deacon, Taytum Clairmont, Tom McKenzie, Greg White, Steve Bienkowski, Maddie Buttinger, Cavell Johnson
ANSWERS
21. Ducey attended Glenview Park in Cambridge. He batted left and threw right and hit 31 dingers in the Bigs.
Side note: The last game he ever played was with the Montreal Expos.
22. Leggatt was both born in Cambridge and attended high school there at Galt Collegiate.
Unlike myself, he was/is a rightie and yes, he did win once on Tour. It was at the Tucson Open in 2002.
23. The Woodcroft sisters are members of our national field hockey team. They both attended Sir John A. Macdonald in Waterloo and both played for the University of Toronto.
It was Ireland that (sadly) ended their Olympic dream in a neck-and-neck, two-game aggregate-score match that came down to penalty shots.
24. i-C, ii-B, iii-E, iv-A, v-D
25. Whistle Bear opened its first nine holes in 2000.
Pearson was born in 1992.
St. Jeromes closed up in 1990.
And The Wealthy Barber hit the shelves in 1989.
(the Detroit Lions did NOT win the Super Bowl that year - or any year since - or any year prior, for that matter).
26. After graduating from CHCI, Kipfer played Division 1 ball at Providence who are known as the Friars. He was recruited and ultimately coached by Rick Pitino (Knicks & Celtics in the NBA; Boston University, Providence, Kentucky & Louisville in the NCAA; currently coach of the Greek national team) who led the Friars to a Final Four appearance.
Kipfer's teammate on that Providence team was the current head coach of the Oklahoma Thunder, Billy Donovan - who once coached the Florida Gators to back-to-back NCAA national titles.
27. Chris Ackie is a professional football player who toils for the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL. After graduating from Preston High School, he was a defensive standout for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
He is a linebacker.
28. Wayne Kooyman, Don Cameron, Randy Steinman, Darren Stevenson, Greg Ross, Melanie Hnetka & Jeff Hutchison.
29. Waterloo Wolves, KCI Raiders, Resurrection Phoenix, Ayr Centennials, Elmira Sugar Kings, Conestoga Condors, K-W Braves
30. Senator Deacon coached badminton with various national and international teams.
Taytum Clairmont is currently tearing it up for the women's hockey team at the University of Waterloo.
Tom McKenzie was a longtime all-star shortstop for the Kitchener Panthers and was named to the IBL's 100th Anniversary All-Time team.
Greg White is the current head coach of the amazing Jacob Hespler Hawks who recently captured their 7th consecutive WCSSAA Sr. football title after winning an OFSAA championship one year ago.
Steve Bienkowski was recently voted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame. He is the GM of the Kitchener Rangers and has twice been named OHL Executive of the Year.
Resurrection grad Maddie Buttinger was an all-American pentathlete (I'll accept "track & field") at Notre Dame University.
Cavell Johnson is the current head coach of the K-W Titans professional basketball team.
