Golden Hawks beat York for second straight win
The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team won its second straight game on Thursday night, beating the York Lions, 5-2. The win came in Laurier’s final home contest of the calendar year.
Waterloo native Danny Hanlon opened the scoring for the Hawks just over a minute into the game, getting his fourth of the season and giving the home side an early lead. York tied the game with a powerplay marker nearly 18 minutes later, on a goal from Braydon Buziak. Laurier goalie Matt Williams was strong in the opening frame, facing 15 York shots.
After killing another penalty early in the second, the Golden Hawks got on the offensive, with Ethan Wiseman scoring his seventh goal of the season, followed by Jeremy Pullara’s first of the campaign, to open up a 3-1 lead. Shortly after, York used their powerplay again to beat Williams, as Alex Mowbray scored with just under four minutes to play in the second, making the score 3-2 Laurier.
The Hawks iced the game in the third period, as Connor Graham scored shorthanded on a nice feed from Neil Aird, who earned two assists in the game. Hanlon potted his second of the game into an empty net in the dying minutes, and Laurier hung on for the 5-2 win. Williams finished with 42 saves in goal, while Mack Shields stopped 23 in a losing effort for York. Hanlon, Aird and Pullara all had two points on the night.
Laurier wraps up its 2019 schedule tonight in Windsor against the Lancers, before welcoming Windsor to Waterloo to begin the 2020 portion of the schedule in January. York, meanwhile, stays in town to face the University of Waterloo Warriors tonight at Columbia Ice Fields.
