Siskins upset first-place Cyclones for first win of GOJHL season

The Waterloo Siskins are on the board. The defending Sutherland Cup champions got their first win of the Greater Ontario Hockey League season on Sunday afternoon against the first place Listowel Cyclones. The win comes a day after the Siskins earned their first point of the season, tying the Kitchener Dutchmen, 3-3.

The tie and victory give Waterloo three points on the season, two behind the Brantford Bandits for seventh place. Listowel, meanwhile, remains one point clear of the Elmira Sugar Kings and Cambridge Redhawks for first place in the Midwestern Conference. As has been the case in recent years, the top half of the Midwest standings is crowded. Elmira and up-start Cambridge each have 14 points, while Kitchener and the Stratford Warriors are also tied with 12. In an eight-team conference, every game has meaning.

Also on the weekend, Kitchener crushed the Brampton Bombers on Friday night, 7-2, while Listowel shutout Stratford, 3-0. The Warriors fell on Saturday night as well, 4-3 on the road against Cambridge. On Sunday, Elmira handled Brampton, 11-1, at home and the Redhawks scored their second win of the weekend with a 4-0 victory in Brantford.

The Midwestern teams are off until Friday night, when Kitchener will travel to Brampton, Listowel will host Brantford, and the Sugar Kings and Warriors will crash in Stratford.
