Mohawks beat St. Catherines in three straight, advance to second round
The Elora Mohawks are moving on after sweeping the St. Catherines Spartans three games to none in their Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League first round match-up. The clinching game for the Mohawks came in the form of a 12-4 drubbing on Wednesday night in Elora.
The home side put immediate pressure on the Spartans, outshooting them 22-7 in the first period and getting goals from Jonah White, Ryan Mueller and Dawson Bolger to take a 3-0 lead. St. Catherines scored twice early in the second period to cut into the lead, but that was as close as the Spartans would get. Trent Spear went off for a hat-trick in the second, part of a 7-goal outburst from Elora, giving the Mohawks a commanding 10-4 lead heading into the third.
In the third, White scored his second of the game on a shorthanded rush before Dean Sealey put the series on ice. The third period shots on goal were indicative of the game, as Elora threw 21 balls on goal to St. Catherines' nine. The total shots in the game were 68-31 in favour of Elora.
Zack Cameron finished the series as Elora's leading point-getter, racking up 17 points (8-9-17) in just three games. He sits tied for fourth for the OJBLL lead in playoff points.
Elora is the first team in the OJBLL Western Conference to advance, and will now await its second round opponent. In the other series', Six Nations leads Guelph 2-1, Hamilton leads Owen Sound 2-0, and Windsor leads Niagara 2-0.
Panthers looking to pounce on first place this weekend
The Kitchener Panthers and Barrie Baycats have been locked in a rivalry over the course of the past few Intercounty Baseball League seasons, and this campaign is proving to be no different.
Through 17 games this season, the Panthers record sits at 14-3, putting them half a game behind the Baycats for first place in the IBL. They'll try to improve on that record and leap frog the reigning champs from Barrie over the weekend.
Kitchener begins the weekend in Hamilton tonight, before visiting Guelph tomorrow afternoon and finishing the three-in-three set on Sunday afternoon at home versus Hamilton.
