Elora scores five in the third, falls in OT to Hamilton
The Elora Mohawks found themselves trailing by six goals late in the second period in Sunday's Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League game against the Hamilton Bengals. They clawed their way back to tie the game, but ultimately fell in overtime, 12-11.
Nick Aitchison opened the scoring for the Mohawks just 53 seconds into the game, and the home side doubled its lead under two minutes later on a Ryan Mueller tally. Hamilton would then rally for six unanswered goals, two on the powerplay and one shorthanded, to bring a 6-2 lead into the second period.
The second frame was played tighter by both teams, but the Bengals answered a Mohawks push with three straight goals, giving them a 10-4 lead in the final minute of the period. With it looking like Hamilton had complete control of the game, Mueller scored his second of the night with under a minute to play in the second, and Elora's offense found its stroke.
Trent Spear cut the deficit to 10-6 early in the third period and his teammates scored thrice more, bringing them to within a goal of Hamilton. Spear then struck again with five minutes to play and the comeback was complete, tying the game 10-10.
In overtime, Sam Dramnitzke completed his hat-trick to put Elora ahead for the first time since they led 2-0, but Hamilton found the equalizer minutes later and the game-winner with one minute left in the OT period, completing a comeback of their own.
The Mohawks, who are tied atop the division with Hamilton, have three games remaining in the regular season and will face London on the road on Thursday night.
Wilmot rides Radbourne's 8-point night to thumping of Oakville
The Wilmot Wild had little trouble with the Oakville Buzz in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League action on Sunday in Wilmot, winning 14-8. Kent Radbourne paced the offense with four goals and four assists to lead all scorers.
It was Oakville that took the lead in the first period, answering every Wilmot tally with one of their own to take a 5-4 advantage into the second period. Early in the second, though, the Wild rattled off three straight goals to steal the lead, then responded to an Oakville goal with two more of their own, and led 9-6 heading into the final frame.
The home side refused to sit back and instead kept the pressure on, scoring five more times. Oakville managed only two goals the rest of the game and Wilmot sealed the convincing win. The Wild have four more games on the schedule this season, with the next being tomorrow night in Caledon.
