She shoots! She scores! A local legacy comes to life on stage as the new Canadian play GLORY chronicles the impressive rise of Cambridge's Preston Rivulettes Women’s Hockey Team.
This exciting stage production tells the story of four friends – Hilda, Nellie, Helen, and Marm – who set out to show the nation that Canada’s favourite pastime isn’t just for men. Set in the 1930s, the women face a number of personal and professional obstacles as they work to make a name for themselves in the world of hockey – a world that seems content to keep them on the bench. Only Hilda knows how to play the game, Nellie can barely skate, and they’re all struggling to feed their families during the Great Depression. The sole candidate to coach them is grumpy rink maintenance man Herb Fach, who says no initially because “Girls don’t play hockey.” Herb eventually comes around, the women figure out how to skate, pass, shoot and defend in a series of comic sequences, and they amazingly win the Ladies Ontario Hockey League championship in their first season. From there it’s one championship after another building an impressive winning streak that is the stuff of legends – their winning average is 95%. Almost 100 years later, the team still exists and their streak is going strong.
Featuring electrifying swing dance choreography inspired by the jazz age, GLORY captures all the thrills, exhilaration, and tension of a great hockey game while celebrating female empowerment. Don’t miss this unique theatrical experience that will fill your heart with pride as a scrappy team of local upstarts pioneer a new path in the world of sport.
Grab your girlfriends, bring your daughter, and celebrate this amazing Canadian story about a couple of girls who proved that a woman's place is on home ice. Go Rivulettes!
GLORY is on stage at the Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge from May 15 to June 8. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge Box Office, online at www.draytonentertainment.com/glory or by calling the Box Office at (519) 621-8000 or toll-free at 1-855-DRAYTON (372-9866).
