GOJHL
The London Nationals were scheduled to host the St. Mary’s Lincolns on Wednesday evening, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The Nats find themselves five points back of the Leamington Flyers for the top spot in the GOJHL West division, as the Flyers have won six straight games and have only lost once in 2019 (14 games). London’s next game will be on Friday night when they play the Stars in St. Thomas.
The Komoka Kings battled the Chatham Maroons through all possible periods to end up in a 4-4 tie. Dario Beljo would score two goals while three other Kings players had multi-point nights. Komoka will next play on Saturday when they host the London Nationals.
The St. Thomas Stars have just one game this weekend, hosting the London Nationals on Friday night. The Nats have won all four games of the season series, outscoring St. Thomas 15-5 in those games. Puck drop will be at 7:30pm from the Joe Thornton Recreation Centre.
Western Mustangs
Hockey
The Western Mustangs women’s hockey team will look to capitalize on some weaker opponents this weekend as they play a pair of Waterloo opponents. On Friday they will face their former head coach Kelly Paton for the second time this season. The Mustangs took the first meeting on November 4th 3-1 in London. Laurier is second-last in the OUA with a 4-16-0-1 record, and have lost four straight games coming into Friday. On Sunday, the Mustangs will host the Waterloo Warriors for their Seniors Night. The Levesque twins, Anthea Lasis, and Beatrice Dufour will definitely be graduating seniors, with fourth year players April Clark, Shailyn Waites, Claire Balas and Catherine O’Connor still to be determined on whether they will play a fifth year. The Waterloo Warriors come into play holding down the final playoff spot in the OUA, three points ahead of ninth-place UOIT. The Warriors won the teams’ last meeting 3-2 in overtime earlier in the season. The Mustangs will be looking to potentially leap into first place as they trail Guelph by five points, but will likely solidify their second spot in the OUA should they come away with six points from the weekend.
The Western Mustangs men’s hockey team will kick off a doubleheader against the Lakehead Thunderwolves tonight from Thompson Arena. Lakehead comes in with an 11-14-1 record, which is one point out of the last playoff spot in the OUA. Western has already clinched a playoff spot with a 14-11-1 record which gives them the third spot in the OUA right now. Although they have clinched a berth in the playoffs, their seeding is yet to be determined, as there are just three points separating third from seventh place in the OUA. Saturday’s game will be Seniors Night for the men’s hockey team, with Trevor Warnaar graduating as the lone fifth year, with any combination of Spenser Cobbold, Jonathan Laser, Ray Huether and Trent Ouellette potentially graduating as well. Friday’s game will be at 7pm while Saturday’s will see a 4pm puck drop.
Basketball
The Mustangs’ basketball teams were set to play the Windsor Lancers on Wednesday evening but the weather caused the cancellation of that game. It will now be played on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Lancers’ women’s team is third in the OUA at 14-6, while their men’s team is in a rebuild with a 6-14 record. On Saturday, the Mustangs will play in St. Catharine’s against the Brock Badgers. This is a huge tilt for the men’s team who trail Brock by two points in the standings for second place in the OUA West. Western took the first meeting between the two earlier in 2019, 80-75 at Alumni Hall. The Mustangs are coming off an 88-85 win over McMaster in their last game, while the Badgers are winners of their last four games.
Volleyball
The Mustangs’ volleyball teams will host the Windsor Lancers on Friday night at Alumni Hall. The Mustangs women’s team have won three straight matches, all in straight sets. The Lady Lancers are 7-7 on the season but have also won three straight coming into action. The men’s team have not played since January 25th where they beat the Trent Excalibur in straight sets. The men are 8-4 on the season, but fourth in an OUA West division that has turned out incredibly competitive. Just two points ahead of them in the standings, sitting in second are the Windsor Lancers who are 9-3 this season. The action starts at 6pm on Friday for the women’s match with the men following at 8pm.
