Midwest's Top 4 Battling for Positioning as GOJHL season rolls on
November has seen the top half of the GOJHL's Midwest Division standings become a logjam, with four teams separated by six points. Listowel, Stratford, Waterloo and Elmira round out the top four, respectively, and each will have its chance to pile up more points this weekend.
The weekend will begin tonight with three Midwest games on the docket, including the Stratford Warriors hosting the Cambridge Redhawks and the Kitchener Dutchmen traveling to Brampton to face the Bombers. The marquee matchup of the night comes in Listowel, though, as the first-place Cyclones welcome the Elmira Sugar Kings to town in what should be a fast-paced, close affair. Listowel is winners of 11-straight while Elmira has quietly joined the pack near the top of the standings. A big crowd is expected in Listowel.
Kitchener and Cambridge will be in action again on Saturday, as the Dutchies visit the Brantford 99ers in what could be classified as an early must-win game for Kitchener, as they must pick up points against lower-seeded teams to keep pace. The Redhawks will host the struggling Waterloo Siskins, who suddenly have dropped five in a row after reeling off seven straight wins.
Cambridge and Waterloo will meet again on Sunday afternoon in the back half of a home-and-home, this time playing at the Waterloo Rec Complex. Listowel will host Stratford on Sunday afternoon, while Kitchener is at home versus Brantford and Elmira welcomes Brampton on Sunday night. As the GOJHL season rolls into mid-November, this jam-packed weekend will likely show teams' true colours with the midway point approaching.
Jones and Schnarr suit up for Team OHL versus Russia
The Canada-Russia Super Series features the Russian national junior team visiting Canada for a six-game series, facing off against all-stars from the WHL, OHL and QMJHL. After Russia and the WHL split the first two games of the series, it was the OHL's turn to take a run at the Russians.
There is local flavour in the series this year, as Waterloo's Ben Jones was selected to play for Team OHL on Thursday night in Sarnia. Jones has been starring for the Niagara Ice Dogs this season and is a Vegas Golden Knights prospect. Team OHL defeated Team Russia on Thursday, 3-1, with Jones generating opportunities for his line but finishing as a minus-1.
Nate Schnarr, also a native of Waterloo, was selected to play in the fourth game of the Series, which goes on Monday night in Oshawa. Schnarr has played the past three seasons with the Guelph Storm and was selected 75th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2017 NHL Draft. Team OHL will look to give Canada a 3-1 series lead over Russia, and build towards a 26th series victory in 31 tries.
