Local GOJHL weekend roundup
There were two games locally on Friday night in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action, with Listowel hosting Brampton and Kitchener visiting Stratford. The Cyclones, who lost to Waterloo on the opening night of the season last week, had no trouble handling Brampton, beating them 6-0. Listowel outshot Brampton 38-14 in the game and got two goals and an assist from Brayden Krieger. In Stratford, the Warriors handed the Dutchmen their first loss of the young season, 5-2. Sean Ross scored twice for Stratford while Tyler Harrison led the Dutchies with two assists.
Kitchener had an opportunity to avenge that loss the next night when it hosted Waterloo at The Aud, but the Siskins prevailed, 5-2. Owen Lane scored twice for Waterloo, including the game-winner on a power play in the second period, while Machus Turner made 24 saves for the win. Also on Saturday night, the Cambridge Redhawks hosted the Brantford 99ers and earned the first win of their existence, 4-3. Cambridge scored twice in the third period, highlighted by Samson Scholten's game-winner with just under two minutes left to play.
Sunday saw two dominant efforts by local teams, with the Siskins first beating Listowel at home, 5-1, before Elmira dismantled Cambridge on Sunday night, 8-2. Waterloo converted five times on 42 shots, including two goals from Alex Lycett and got 30 saves from rookie goaltender Matt Onuska. Chayse Herrfort scored the lone goal for Listowel. In Elmira, the Sugar Kings were relentless in their offensive attack, out-shooting Cambridge 40-22. Jakson Kirk, Jonah Burley and Tyson Hillier each had three points for Elmira.
Local games will pick back up this Friday night, beginning with Stratford hosting Listowel. Waterloo is the only undefeated team in the Midwest Conference sitting at 4-0, followed by Stratford (3-1), Elmira (2-1), Kitchener (2-2), Listowel (1-1-1) and Cambridge (1-2). Brantford and Brampton are both winless on the season.
